Chapter 3: The Design
In this project I was faced with the challenge of balancing the clients’ budget with their design expectations thus, requiring a creative and resourceful approach. To achieve the desired aesthetic while staying within financial constraints, we opted to source cabinets and appliances from a previous kitchen remodel, which we purchased through Ben’s Repurposed Cabinets. This decision not only addressed budgetary needs but also embraced sustainability by repurposing quality materials, reducing waste, and giving the cabinets a second life.
As the designer, it was essential to carefully analyze the dimensions and styles of the repurposed cabinets and adapt them to fit the unique requirements of multiple spaces: the kitchen, wet bar, pantry, and laundry room. This required a high level of precision as I had to rearrange and reconfigure the cabinets in a way that maintained functionality and cohesion across these areas. The added challenge was to ensure that despite the limitations of working with existing cabinet sizes and 3 different finishes, the design would still feel intentional, cohesive, and aligned with the client’s vision.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful design, resourcefulness, and sustainability can work together to create a beautiful, functional space while respecting both environmental and budgetary considerations.
